Cutting-Edge Outpatient Care with Accessible Cost

Traditional radiation therapy (X-ray therapy) uses high doses of radiation over a generalized area of the body to kill cancer cells and reduce tumors. High-energy photon beams are passed through the body, damaging both healthy and cancerous cells, with the goal to damage as many cancer cells as possible, while avoiding healthy, non-cancerous tissue.

In comparison, proton therapy uses proton beams, offering several advantages over traditional radiation therapy.

Advantages of Proton Therapy vs. X-Ray Therapy

Proton therapy offers several advantages over traditional photon therapy:

  1. Precise, Targeted Treatment: Proton therapy delivers a higher level of radiation than traditional, X-ray therapy, meaning fewer overall treatments and treatment duration. Because of the increased accuracy of the delivery of the protons, physicians can deliver higher doses of radiation to cancerous tumors potentially resulting in higher cure rates.
  2. Fewer Side Effects: Traditional radiation therapy harms the body on the way in and on the way out as it passes through. Compared to proton therapy, less surrounding tissue/organs receive radiation, with a lower risk for complications or side effects.
  3. Effectively Treats Recurring Tumors: Precision proton therapy is the best alternative to recurrent tumors—particularly for those previously treated with traditionalradiation therapy.

Kansas City’s First Outpatient Proton Therapy Provider

Office-based proton therapy is more affordable than hospital-based therapy. This is because hospitals can legally charge higher rates for cancer care. Hospital-based radiation oncology programs are legally allowed by insurers and Medicare to charge higher rates and facility fees, resulting in an upcharge in price for treatment. NCI-designated cancer centers are allowed to charge an even higher amount for the same radiation therapy treatments that are provided at office-based, or outpatient centers like our outpatient proton therapy center. KCPI provides the same level of care, closer to home, for less. Request an appointment today!

Industry-Leading Cancer Treatment, Close to Home

Instead of having to drive downtown (or further) to a hospital-based facility, KCPI patients receive care in Overland Park. Considering that radiation therapy is typically five days a week for one to two months, making a huge difference in the lives and schedules of our patients. KCPI is the only office-based proton radiation facility in the central United States. We are proud to be able to offer this new type of cancer treatment at a lower cost and with more convenience for our patients. Request an appointment today!
